You don't get as clear and concise a title as Session: Skateboarding Sim Game. There won't be any confusion over what the game could be about - a skateboarding simulator. It's definitely not the first skateboarding game we've seen. Still, it arguably does take a more unique approach to the genre.

Session: Skateboarding Sim Game aims to splash a bit of realism into the mix as found into some of the more trivial life simulators. This early access game will put you in the shoes of an average skateboarder looking to find places in the big city to improve skills and build skate parks out of everything around. The realism of skateboarding in this game is unlike what we've seen before. The visuals present realistic cityscapes that aren't shaped to skate on like many other skateboarding games are. You'll have to travel around and find elements to curate into ramps, rails, and pipes that you can showcase your tricks on.

Even though there aren't really any objectives, Session: Skateboarding Sim Game is quite a refreshing sports experience. There's no pressure, and gameplay can be intense or as casual as you want. Realism facilitates a high immersion factor. That includes cameras that look like amateur skate videos, imperfect skate spots, and control mechanisms that don't execute flash tricks in one button.

The addictiveness of this game is that it's not easy to become the best skater around. You're really going to have to put some effort into it. But that's the appealing aspect - it's a much more down-to-earth experience and reminiscent of the skateboarding culture. It won't be challenging to draw the masses into this game, especially when it leaves early access.

Despite some of the 'real' features of controlling the board, Session: Skateboarding Sim Game is an excellent skateboarding game. The mechanics give you the capability to craft your own experience and don't feel overzealous to the point of being silly. The Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series tends to be guilty of this sometimes.

It's already a great experience in early access, meaning that it's only going to get better. While the developers work out the kinks in gameplay, you can master that dual-stick control schematic. Since the release of Skate and its subsequent sequels back in 2007, three competing games (Skater XL, Session Skate Sim, and TRUE SKATE) have dominated that specific type of realistic skateboarding game. Direct competition in this small market has led to a real divide amongst the fans, and a gold rush towards the Nintendo Switch. Now we have a first entry with Session:Skate Sim, but how does it bode for this genre coming to handheld The answer is a resounding bad.

Session Skate Sim is strictly speaking by the long-awaited Skate 4 and not really a spiritual sequel. If it is indeed the simulation of this most advanced discipline on the market, it is exaggeratedly complicated to take in hand and still quite empty, closer to a big nostalgic sandbox game of the early 2000s.

The mission structure of the game devolves into going to a place, doing a trick or route, strung along by forgettable story dialogue. The missions have a habit of being poorly explained, furthered by being unable to re-read text boxes explaining what you need to do. And rarely do the inputs needed for specific moves get shown during these prompts. For better or worse, Session is a game for the hardcore skater. While its dedication to realism is impressive, the frustration in the early hours is likely to turn most off.

Session: Skate Sim is a sports video game developed by Montreal independent developer Crea-ture Studios (stylized as creā-ture Studios Inc.) for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. The game was considered by many as the spiritual successor to the Skate series.

In early November 2017, Crea-ture Studios released a free demo for Session. A trailer released by the team shows several clips of the demo, which is set in an unnamed jail and allows players to freely skate in a closed skatepark. Later that month, the team opened the project on Kickstarter, which successfully reached its initial goal after three days. A trailer for Session was unveiled during the Microsoft conference at E3 2018. Session was released on Steam Early Access on 17 September 2019, and for Xbox Game Preview on 17 June 2020. On 18 January 2021, it was announced that Nacon would be publishing Session. In July 2021, it was announced that the game would be fully releasing for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. Nearly a year later, it was announced that a full release would be available on 22 September 2022. In February 2022, the game was renamed from Session to Session: Skate Sim.

What makes this game stand-out, for better or worse, is how players control the skateboard. Unlike Skate, which utilizes the right analog stick for tricks and the left for movement, Sessions: Skate Sim uses each analog stick to control their respective legs. This means that to do an ollie, the player will hold down the right stick down to prep and pop by flicking the left stick forward and vice versa for goofy. With both sticks occupied, movement is assigned to the left and right triggers which represent weight distribution and pushing is done by pressing a button, the square button in this case.

Sure Blubba and the underground parking lot can get you big air, but if air is what you want, head to the 2 Packs Center and its multiple stories of scaffolding. Stand on a DIY item, then raise yourself as high as the game will physically let you go.
